Free School Meals: Support Available for Families

Families across our schools are being encouraged to check whether they may be eligible for free school meals and the additional support that comes with them. Free school meals can help with the cost of living while ensuring children receive a healthy meal during the school day, helping them stay focused, healthy and ready to learn.

There are a number of different free school meal schemes available:

Universal Infant Free School Meals

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school lunch. Families are still encouraged to apply for Targeted or Expanded Free School Meals where eligible, as this can provide additional benefits for schools.

Universal Free School Meals for Key Stage 2

Through the Mayor of London’s Universal Free School Meals Programme, pupils in Years 3 to 6 currently receive a free school meal. Families who may be eligible for Targeted or Expanded Free School Meals are encouraged to apply, as schools may receive additional support funding where applicable.

Targeted Free School Meals

Targeted Free School Meals are available for children whose parents or carers meet the Government's eligibility criteria. For example, families receiving Universal Credit with a household income below £7,400 per year after tax (excluding benefits) may qualify. Eligible pupils receive free meals and their school receives additional pupil premium funding, which can be used to provide extra learning support, resources and enrichment opportunities.

Expanded Free School Meals

Expanded Free School Meals are available for children whose parents or carers receive Universal Credit. Eligible children receive free school meals, and eligibility is reviewed annually to ensure families continue to meet the qualifying criteria.

Additional Benefits

Children who are eligible for free school meals may also benefit from access to the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme, helping families access activities and support during school holidays.

Auto-Enrolment Checks

Each year, Hillingdon Council checks whether families who are not currently receiving free school meals may be eligible. Where a family appears to qualify, they will be contacted directly and given the opportunity to opt out if they wish.

How to Apply

Applications should be made through your child's school. Parents and carers will need to provide information including their National Insurance (NI) number or National Asylum Support Service (NASS) number, date of birth, surname, address and details of their child so that eligibility can be checked.
